Applaud your decision not to homeschool. Please don't take that as a reflection on you, as I think you're far more qualified to home school than many of the people doing it.
But as far as I can tell, the whole thing takes WAY more time, energy, dedication, smarts, patience, creativity and energy (yes, that one twice) than most people realize. That's based on having seen a dozen or so moms in our SF moms group doing a poor job, and one of our friends do a good job. To do it right, it has to be your entire life, and most of us, though we'd like to think differently, just aren't up for it.
Good luck with the wait list. We understand what you mean about not wanting your kid in the "sit down and shut up" type of school. We've been lucky to find two schools now that were close enough to our needs, but not everywhere has such nice choices as we've had. I suspect your worst case is having Ike in a "normal" school until mid year when your wait list will kick in, but as you say, transisions are not the best option.
