Playing with Telemarketer Minids

A conversation I had a few years ago that I recently remembered and want to keep.

Phone rings at Joe's parents place. I answer.

"Dadek Residence."

"Hello, may I speak to Mrs. Dadek please?"

<pause>

"Which one? There are three."

"Uh. Mrs. Joseph Dadek"

"Well, that narrrowed it down to two. Wanna try again?"

"Uh. Mrs. Thelma Dadek."

"Ah. You want Grandma. May I ask who's calling?"

Etc, etc

It just amused the hell out of me to be in a house where I could participate in the Dr. Jones scene from The Last Crusade. "Mrs. Dadek?" Three heads turn. "Yes?"

My sister is named Linda Elizabeth; before she got married, she was of course Linda Elizabeth TenEyck.

When my parents divorced, my dad ended up marrying a woman named... Linda Elizabeth. No, really.

But wait, it gets better. My stepmom went to Washington University in St. Louis back in the day. Guess which college my sister decided to go to? ...yup.

For a while after she graduated, my sister was living with my dad and stepmom. This meant that occasionally there would be phone conversations like this:

"Hello, may I speak to Linda, please?"

"Which Linda do you want?"

"Linda TenEyck?"

"Which one?"

"Um... Linda Elizabeth TenEyck?"

"Keep going."

"The Linda Elizabeth TenEyck who graduated from Washington University?"

"Keep going..."

"...in <year>?"

"Oh, you want that Linda! Let me see if she's in."

I love telling telemarketers that Mrs. French is in Kentucky and no, she's not expected "back", ever.
