Say you have a child like mine, who picked up the knitting needles as if she were born with them in her hand. A level 1 or 2 case would neither hold her interest, nor challenge her in any way. This project will. I got the pattern from the Handwork Teacher at the Sacramento Waldorf School. All students make this case. It's gorgeous. It's a challenge. Have fun!!

Yarn used is Lamb's Pride by Brown Sheep in Worsted Weight. Names (if known) are given in () the idea is that you start with the purple on the bottom section and end up with red at the top.
Pattern
CO 24 stitches. Each Section is 10 rows each

Section 1 (purple) garter stitch
Section 2 (periwinkle) reverse garter stitch
Section 3 (skyway) stockinette
Section 4 (2 greens) color work. 2 Rows color A, 2 Rows color B
Section 5 (lime, goldenrod) Checkerboard (stockinette/colorwork) 3 stitches yellow, 3 stitches green for 5 rows, then 3 stitches green 3 stitches yellow for final 5 rows
Section 6 (Goldenrod) 4 X 4 rib
Section 7 (Orange) Checkerboard stitch
Section 8 (red/pink) Fair Isle (create a SIMPLE Fair Isle pattern. Like a Cross or and X over 5 rows)
Section 9 (Red) eyelet stitch

Put right sides together and sew seam across bottom and side. Finger knit a cord, weave it through the eyelet stitch on top, tie off. You now have a completed patchwork Flute/Recorder Case

(Place holder post so I don't lose the pattern for Gwen. I'll post pictures when she's done. She's in the middle of Section 5 right now.)

I had Foundation Studies this weekend. The Art for this session was drawing.  *Groan*

I will not say I suck at drawing. I will not say I don't get it. But I will say...I'm learning. I'm just slow.

First we tried pastels on paper. After about 2 hours of work I ended up with this.

2012-11-10 17.34.03

Then we moved onto crayon. This is about 30 minutes of work.

2012-11-10 17.33.53

Then back to pastels...about an hour.

2012-11-10 17.34.12

And lastly pencils. This is after about an hour...and it's so not finished. And I'm not sure where to go next with it to continue it...I need to finish coloring in the boat, and the sails...and I've got to fix the cliff but I don't know how...

Bonus points to people who can correctly ID the myths or stories I drew for the last three drawings.

This time around is so much different. Ike I dragged through kicking and screaming (sometimes literally). The girls? They are HUNGRY. They want to learn, they ask me for more lessons. "What else can we do for school today?" They've been told over and over again in the last few years, "oh, you'll learn that when you start school" or "Oh....First Graders do that" that now they are in First Grade....they want to learn. They absorb it. And they run with it. It's pretty awesome to watch.

They are loving the learning their letters so much, I almost can't wait for Math! Now that's fun stuff!

About a week ago, I thought I was being a Bad Homeschooling Mama.

I had no plan.

The last time I planned to teach First Grade I took an entire summer to figure out what in the heck I was going to do, and how I was going to do it. This time it's different. Elli and Gwen are not Ike. I also know a whole lot more than I did 3 years ago. Last month I ran back to homeschooling after pondering it for a week. The girls went to school on a Friday, the following Monday...they did not. I had a crutch so I could stall. I was given the first 10 days of Form Drawing and the first Math block. But after that...nothing planned. And even then, I did not want to start the first math block after that form drawing block. And Oh, I'm going to be gone for a week in the middle of October for my observation at Santa Cruz Waldorf. So what to do? Well, I fell back on advice from my Mentor Melisa. "Don't teach anything unless you are prepared to do so." Always good advice.

So this last Monday, I told the girls I wasn't ready to teach them the next block of studies. We played. I pondered. I read. We cuddled and read lots of fairy tales. We knit. I cleaned. We went to the park. I spent most of the week sick (physically, spiritually, and emotionally) and spent most of Thursday sleeping (I have such an amazing husband...let me tell you!). And on Friday afternoon I did actually do some planning. And then, AFTER all that...I got inspired. I found it. The container story and the approach I wanted to use to teach the alphabet, phonics, spelling, and the math. How I wanted to present the Fairy Tales. How to turn First Grade this time around from "Following Melisa's Plans"....to creating my own. Admittedly by stealing the best ideas from ALL of my teachers and fusing them together in a way to work for my Elli and Gwen. But, I finally found the Art. I've made it MINE.

Now, in this place, I finally feel...I'm a Waldorf Teacher.

I'm not a Mama playing at being a Teacher. I'm not a Student-Teacher in over her head, I am a Teacher.

Musings Adding Co-op and Vision Therapy has eaten more out of my schedule than I realized it would Oy! I'm going to try and do school with Ike before co-op instead of walking the dog. That way we can just be done. Last couple of times we did it after we got back while the girls were in quiet time, but then I didn't get quiet time and I got cranky. We'll see what happens.

Library in the afternoon, followed by Ike, Elli, and Gwen off to Kidspark. Date night for Mom and Dad (we spent Gray's nap cuddling and talking, then went to the mall and spent money on various things)

This was a REALLY rough week for me. We went and visited my Grandmother over the weekend and Sunday night was the 5th bad night of sleep in a row. At one point on monday Ike was refusing to do what I was asking (first time he's done it) and I caught myself before totally losing it. Wasn't his fault that I was completely burned out. I stopped what we were doing, put everything away and we finished up on tuesday.

Other rough thing. Ike is seriously getting frustrated with drawing. Give him a pencil and he's quite good, but these block style crayons are driving him crazy. Due to the fact that he's having such a hard time getting them to do what he wants them to do (both in technique and color blending), he's half convinced himself that he can't draw.

On Tuesday he hid under the table and refused to come out because the dragon he was drawing didn't look like either the one I drew on the board, nor like the one I was drawing in my MLB. I think 2 things are causing the problem. 1. The lighting. The lamp in our dining room has 4 separate lights, thus throwing all sorts of shadows. Its difficult for me to see where I'm going. 2. His deficient fine motor skills. I think he just needs to keep at it. I'm trying to pull him into drawing after school (by sitting down and drawing myself), but he doesn't want to. But I can, however, alleviate one layer of stress about the crayons. After much meditation and talking to Joe, I'm going to give Ike the box of 8 crayons. He doesn't like the fact that he has a really hard time creating the secondary colors. I can give those to him and let him focus on the technique side of it. I can still bring in the color blending aspect by making tertiary colors and encouraging him to do so...and I think that's the best thing I can do for him right now

I've decided NOT to post every single picture I've taken of Ike's work for the last two weeks.

I am however posting some of the highlights and a link to the online photo album for those who are interested and want to see more.

This show Ike's introduction to King Equals and Math. Ike definitely likes King Equals.

This was the riddle for the number 4. I thought the drawing came out quite nicely.

The Riddle for Number 6 and the Verse for Copywork. I think my handwriting's getting better. I need to work more on making everything the same SIZE!!! Its pretty straight though. (No smart-ass comments you.)

Some of Ike's work.

And here's the link to my photobucket album where I'm keeping all the photo's of Ike's work. Its hard to find pictures of "normal" Main Lesson Books. Most people only post "best work". So I'm going to share it all, so that there's at least one comprehensive example of a normal kid.
