When Ike came home on the last day of school before Christmas he says to me "Sorry Mom...your present just isnt' ready...you'll have to wait." I said "no problem"

Yesterday when I pick him up from school he has this huge cabbage in a plastic bag.

"Is that your's Ike?"
"Yep! I grew it in Gardening class"
"Awesome! It looks beautiful!"
"Merry Christmas Mama!"
"This is for me?"
"Yea, it wasn't ready to be picked before vacation, it was ready today."
"Did you get to choose what to grow?"
"Yep. I chose a cabbage 'cause I knew that's something you would like"

He's right...I weighed it, 3lbs 15.5 oz. It's a big cabbage. It's slated to become coleslaw and jalapeno saurkraut.

Doesn't he look so proud?

This is the only place, where after a few days of rain I see  sprouting in my garden: green beans, cilantro, and squash. It will be fun to watch and see what survives the winter.

Was, in fact, pretty pathetic. I couldn't get anything to grow. The severe lack of water may have had something to do with this, but I'm not sure.

A few weeks ago, right before the Super Bowl Party, we decided to rake up several years worth of leaves from both the lawn and the tanbark under the play structure. As I was having the children haul it all out to the street for pickup, I realized I was sending out beautiful mulch. So I had the kids dump it on the garden space. A mix of partially composted leaves and tanbark. Good Stuff! And its about 3-4 inches thick over the garden space. It should really help the garden this year.

I went out and looked at the garden today to survey the spontaneous growth of green stuff due to rain. Awesome! In addition to a bunch of weeds, I've got cilantro and garlic coming up! Neither of which I've planted recently. These are plants/seeds left over from last year. I'll give it a couple of more days and harvest some cilantro and I'll try to remember to harvest the garlic sometime.

Now that February is over, I'll have to start thinking about this years garden. I may have to attempt to make the drip system work. I've got three heads in that section of the garden, I'd just have to purchase a bunch of lines and drip spouts. The garden might actually do something this year if I do that!

I'm posting a lot about Gray lately and that's okay...he's too cute not to. =)

Earlier in the spring I had a head of garlic sprout on me. Rather than cook it up, I decided to find out what might happen if I broke the cloves apart and planted them.

About 3 weeks ago, Gray and I pulled them out of the ground.

Not a bad harvest for a head of garlic!

Without having to rip anything up.

I've been looking for these instructions. I want to turn part of my front lawn into planting beds for food for next spring. I think I need to hop to it and get this started for them to be ready by then. It doesn't look hard, I just need to collect the materials. Lucky for me, people leave compostables (green and brown) on the street every monday night. Some of it might disappear into my yard before the city can get it.
